Council eyes minimum size for lifestyle blocks

Tough new rural development rules proposed for the New Plymouth district will significantly reduce the number of lifestyle lots and homes able to be built in the countryside.

The New Plymouth District Council is proposing to increase the minimum rural allotment size from four hectares to 20 and change the minimum setback from 10 to 30 metres.

This will effectively reduce the number of homes allowed on a single 20 hectare block to one and see houses built well back from the road.

Currently one dwelling is allowed per four hectare block. One hectare is equivalent to two rugby fields.

The long expected recommendations are part of a range of measures to protect rural character.

Ironically, anticipation of these changes has almost certainly resulted in a significant jump in rural subdivision applications as developers get in ahead of the expected rule changes

I reluctantly decided to part with my magic pen and give it to my younger brother, Allan.

I arrived home at about noon, everyone glad to see me and asking questions. I presented Mom and Dad their Washington Monument gift, remembering that Dad always liked thermometers. Karen was thrilled with the rosary and Allan ran to find some paper to experiment on. Then Mom got a funny look on her face and started crying. She ran upstairs to their bedroom and closed the door. A few minutes later, Dad came storming down the stairs and yelled at me, “Why did you make your mother cry? Where’s that thermometer and come with me.” He raced me out to the back door, got a hammer and smashed that Washington Monument to bits. By this time I was crying and confused.

Later, I found out that even though Mom never went to church, she always wanted a rosary of her own and thought I gave it to my sister to spite her.

Brinkley, husband need therapy, trial told

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. — Christie Brinkley should get custody of her two youngest children — but she and her narcissistic husband both need therapy, a court-appointed psychologist said Tuesday at their divorce trial.

Dr. Stephen Herman, questioned by the children’s lawyer, Theresa Mari, said the former Sports Illustrated model needs therapy as “an outlet for her anger and feeling of betrayal” by her unfaithful husband.

He said Brinkley, who’s been married four times, also “needs to start working on deeper issues” — including “her choice of male figures.”

Herman met 11 times with the parents, their 13-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter.

He said estranged husband Peter Cook is a “narcissist” who constantly needs to have his insatiable ego fed. The architect “needs constant reassurance that he is a terrific guy,” Herman said in a psychological report.

The psychologist said shared custody “is not at all a viable option.” But he later agreed during cross examination that both “Christie and Peter have done a superb job of being parents.” And he said Cook should be involved in his children’s lives — for instance, caring for them if their mother is away on business.

Brinkley also has a daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, with the musician Billy Joel. The 22-year-old testified that Cook picked on her and once shoved her head into a bucket of water after she showered too long and caused a plumbing problem
